Thank you for this… conventional medicine has helped me, but I feel something is missing. I understand the trauma wound in my head, but connecting to it and working with it, well that goes beyond most of the medical help I have gotten. It is comforting to know that others are out there and I am not alone. Again thank you for your kindness 🧚‍♂️

You are most definitely not alone! You just haven’t quite found your tribe yet, but I think you’re on your way. This is a wonderful place to find like people who will support your journey.

Linnea, What you describe feels steady and clear. Your way of holding science and soul together makes space for something honest. You’re not forcing them to merge—you’re allowing them to meet where they already do, in lived experience.

Your path speaks to something I’ve seen too: that healing often begins where categories fall short. The language you use stays close to experience. It gives room for reflection without drifting away from the body.

I appreciate how you name the importance of integration—not just as a concept, but as a practice. Your presence here feels considered and careful. That matters.

Thank you for offering this space with clarity and respect.

Thank you so much, Jay. I’ve felt this piece percolating for quite some time, but I was finding it difficult to articulate. My irreverent self simply says “I am a walking dialectic!“ and while that’s true, It’s not very poetic and doesn’t communicate the depth of the message. I was able to really drop into the process yesterday and find the clarity. Thank you for naming that. This was a joyful and meaningful exercise. 💜

“Science mind and mystical heart” yes! I’m constantly looking for language to express that sentiment. Neuroscientist, psychedelic educator, and reiki master here exploring the spaces between science and cultural wisdom. Loving your words and I’m excited to see what comes next.

Ode to the INFINITE, the FINITE & OUR FOOLISHNESS

.

Life’s irony’s the view we benefit

from physical, material delight

as though naught counts but what’s felt or in sight

while ignored our souls are desperate

for what should count the most—the infinite;

yet we’ll go on till it’s too late, despite

much instinct in us of what’s truly right

that life’s content is so inadequate.

.

Regardless, to that same life we cling tight

since the physical solely seems definite

thus for material matters we fight

—like the blind-mind addict’s barbiturate—

while Great Hereafter’s placed post-the-finite

so skewed are values foremost we’ll permit.

This is lovely, Linnea. I'm a hypnotherapist of over thirty years and I specialize in working with people dealing with all kinds of trauma. In fact I just finished the 4th draft of my book on that subject last night! I agree that integration is important. My contribution is on the spirituality side of things. I'm also a Unity minister. I've found that if we can access the messages trapped in the subconscious and the possibilities swirling in the superconscious, people can find sanctuary and often freedom from the wounds of trauma. I'm excited to read what you have to share. You've probably been writing for awhile here, but I just found you.

I'm so glad that we connected Jane. I've been feeling for a while that there are more of us that think this way then we might otherwise suspect. We're just nervous about speaking up. The spirituality side is so very important, thank you for the work that you do. I'm looking forward to connecting more.🙏

Thanks Linnea. I'm really glad to connect too. I've been recognizing that I'm standing in between mental health and spirituality and am wondering how to describe myself. What bookshelf am I on? Although I practice hypnotherapy and I've identified 5 treatments that are integral to how I practice, I know I'm really a channel of divine healing. The power moving through us and as us is so much bigger. That's what truly sucks about trauma. We get disconnected from the marvel that we are. I'm so glad to know you are out there doing your brilliant work and drawing us together.

Spending many decades in college and graduate school getting a PhD in Sociology has left me little room for experiencing spirituality. I once went beyond the five senses with the magic mushroom. I like the balance you struck between science and the mystical. I have traumatic memories that haunt me and I want to let go of. Thank you for offering healing messages.

It’s really quite sad that our institutions look down on the exploration of spirituality. There is so much that science has no way to measure or test, but that is still valid.

I’m glad you got a chance to see beyond the veil with magic mushrooms, and I hope that the journey brought you insight, wisdom, and healing.

I’m very sorry that you still have traumatic memories that haunt you for perhaps they don’t need to haunt you forever.

Linnea, What a beautiful essay! Your work and view of the work resonate deeply with me. The veil between science and magic is thin. Spending time in nature--and experiencing the ecstasy and mysticism of it all--puts science into proper perspective--as one tool in the toolbox.

Hey Linnea! Was wonderful to read this. I too have a science background yet also crave the mystical and magical. Science is amazing! But it's not the only answer. There was a time when religion, science, medicine and magic where all woven together. Yet in our current day and age, this seems to have unraveled. And why I feel we are seeing so much trauma, I definitely have my own. My call, and I hear this in your writing, is to weave this all back together. And we don't do this alone - it's a collaboration.

I have practiced both pediatric medicine, and family therapy, within that space you speak of. Thank you for your eloquence.

No, healing is not all science. Hopefully the science keeps you from some of the stupidest things you might otherwise do...

Being in a healing profession means that you share something essential, from your core being, with the other person.

After many years in practice, I am pivoting. I have became a writer, still exploring the profound, and the ill-defined...

Dear Rae, thank you so much for your comments and for the many, many people you helped in your career in pediatric and family medicine. Healing requires knowledge of course, but the other side - the parts of ourselves that we share with clients/patients - is the sacred part of the work that we must not forget. Thank you for continuing to eplxore the ill-defined. 🙏
